Understand your estimate
How it works
Estimate pool heating costs using measured heater fuel or an assessment of the heat the pool needs. Choose the heater fuel first so the energy and price fields use the right units. The two input paths describe the same heating job; do not add them together.
For measured use, enter fuel used on an operating day. For assessed useful heat, enter heat needed over the season and the matching heater performance. Useful heat is heat reaching the pool. Purchased electricity, gas or propane is the energy used to provide it.
You can also estimate heating the water once from a starting to a target temperature. The result shows this separately from ongoing heating. Check whether it is already included in your measured or assessed seasonal amount.

Formula
Seasonal input comes from measured daily heater fuel times season days, or assessed seasonal useful heat divided by heater efficiency/COP. Use the appropriate electrical kWh, gas m³ or propane litres and energy conversion. Heat needed for one water-heating event = 1.16 × volume in m³ × temperature rise, excluding ongoing losses. Initial heat divided by available heating output gives estimated time for one heating event.
COP (coefficient of performance) is useful heat delivered divided by electricity input. SCOP is this ratio over a season. A ratio of 4 means 4 kWh of heat per 1 kWh of electricity; use the ratio itself, without a percent conversion.
Use a percentage as a fraction once: for example, 50% means 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5. Use 0.5 in the energy formula; do not divide it by 100 again.
Read seasonal fuel and cost alongside the chosen units. The separate initial-heating time uses available heat output, not electrical input. It is an ideal heating-time estimate for the stated temperature rise and excludes ongoing losses.

Assumptions and limits
Use metered heater fuel or an installer heat assessment for your pool's cover, temperature and operating season.
Published model values apply only at the selected air and water conditions, including humidity where stated. Confirm the exact product against the linked maker table. No interpolation or seasonal performance is inferred. A warm-up spanning different water temperatures needs your own assessed performance.
A measured day may not describe the whole season. The calculation repeats the entered conditions rather than predicting weather or changes in pool use. Keep daily fuel use and seasonal useful heat separate from each other.
Do not add initial heating twice. Heat output and fuel input have different meanings, and a single laboratory test is not automatically a yearly efficiency. Displayed money is rounded, while totals use unrounded values.
Country rules
This Canadian version uses the electricity, gas and propane units shown in the form. Electricity is priced per kWh, gas per cubic metre and propane per litre. Match the fuel price to the same unit as the fuel amount.
Use supplier energy content where you choose that option, and use the price on your bill including applicable tax. The linked method or product source does not verify your personal pool demand, fuel price or equipment condition. Check its date and the exact product details.
When to ask a professional
Ask a qualified pool heating installer to confirm the heat assessment, fuel conversion and heater performance. Bring the pool details, planned temperatures, operating season and exact model table.
Use the appropriate qualified professional for electrical or fuel-system changes. The calculation cannot confirm a safe installation, select a heater or establish pool water-treatment needs. Keep the source records and written quote so the installer can review the same scenario.
Questions and answers
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where do I get the input figures? | Use the actual electricity/fuel bill, smart-meter or inverter record, installer assessment/quote or manufacturer technical sheet. The help explains the units and boundaries; do not guess an unavailable coefficient. |
| What does the calculation include? | Seasonal input comes from measured daily heater fuel times season days, or assessed seasonal useful heat divided by heater efficiency/COP. Use the appropriate electrical kWh, gas m³ or propane litres and energy conversion. Heat needed for one water-heating event = 1.16 x volume in m³ x temperature rise, excluding ongoing losses. Initial heat divided by available heating output gives estimated time for one heating event. |
| Is this a prediction or an assessment? | It calculates the entered scenario. Use metered heater fuel or an installer heat assessment for your pool's cover, temperature and operating season. |
| How are missing figures handled? | Complete the required fields using your bill, equipment records or an installer assessment. Enter 0 only where a quantity is zero or a cost does not apply. |
